NPS YOSEMITE MOBILE APPLICATION

ROLE

INTERACTION & VISUAL DESIGN

Responsible for interface design. We created wireframes and mock ups facilitate better interaction flows.

I worked on the iPad and iPhone version interaction design. The mobile application provides up to date listings of services and programs, site description, an interactive park map and additional useful visitor information.

CHALLENGE

  • Yosemite National park is one of the iconic national park in the US. NPS introduced their app on a mobile device in 2012 .
  • Typically to plan a trip to Yosemite, a traveller wants to know where they can stay, hikes and trail locations, visuals of the locations, facilities information of the site.
  • The challenge was to come up with digital solution for a 100 yrs old brand, match and maintain the brand.

APPROACH

  • The app is updated 8 times a year by NPS staff via a Content Management System and is available for use on Apple and Android smart phones and iPads. We spent great deal of time on the workflows and existing content.
  • It involved lot of analysis through card sorting.
  • We kept it very simple to match the existing brand. Brainstormed to simplify the information architecture.
  • We consolidated park information and listed it according to area, popularity and activities.
  • Adding pictures of the sites helps user identify their interests. Research indicated, trails, hikes, campsite locations turned to be top priority.
  • Recommendations from other travelers holds value. The objective was to make this vast list of trails, hikes, campgrounds, NPS Yosemite programs accessible within few clicks. We started with sorting out and putting together daily activities that meet the needs of a visitor with expectations for things to do in a day in Yosemite.
